Why Does Not Tooth Decay Hurt?

Posted on 12/19/2022 by Mark Bieber
Why Does Not Tooth Decay Hurt?Do you know why tooth decay does not hurt? It is pretty interesting! It is because the tooth enamel is rugged and robust. However, the enamel can break down when tooth decay can occur over time. Here is what you should know.

What Is Tooth Decay?

Decaying is the breaking down of teeth due to acids in the mouth. These acids are produced when plaque (a sticky film of bacteria) breaks down sugars in the mouth. Plaque is constantly forming on teeth and, if not removed, can lead to tooth decay. The best way to prevent tooth decay is to brush and floss regularly and visit the dentist for regular checkups and cleanings. Untreated tooth decay can lead to serious health problems, such as infections, abscesses, and death. In addition, tooth decay can cause pain and difficulty eating. If you think you may have tooth decay, it is essential to see a dentist as soon as possible. Early treatment may help prevent the condition from becoming worse.

Is Tooth Decay Painful?

The early stages of tooth decay are not painful because the enamel, the tooth's hard outer layer, has not yet been affected. However, once the enamel begins to break down, the dentin, the softer inner layer, becomes exposed. It can lead to sensitivity and pain when eating or drinking hot or cold foods and beverages. If tooth decay is left untreated, it can eventually lead to an abscess, a pus-filled pocket that forms around the tooth. Abscesses are pretty painful and can cause severe damage to the surrounding teeth and tissue. For this reason, it is vital to see a dentist as soon as possible if you think you may have a cavity.
