How To Care for Your Teeth After Braces

Posted on 7/10/2023 by Mark Bieber
How To Care for Your Teeth After BracesIt is important to make sure that you take special care of your teeth when the braces come off. This is to ensure that the teeth remain straight and also to ensure that plaque does not form where the brackets were. Taking care of your teeth post-braces will also help to avoid the formation of cavities and maintain healthy gums. Here are a few steps that will help to take care of your teeth post-braces.

Professional Cleaning and A Dental Exam

The first thing you want to do after taking off your braces is to get professional cleaning and a dental exam. The dental exam is to check for cavities that may have formed when you had braces on. The cleaning is necessary because it becomes hard to clean your teeth properly because of the brackets. This means that your teeth may stain from strongly colored drinks and even coffee.

In addition, flossing also becomes nearly impossible with brackets on. Thus, you will also have to ensure that you book a cleaning appointment to get rid of the tartar that may have built up.

Teeth Whitening

As stated earlier, because of the brackets, it becomes hard to clean your teeth properly, therefore your teeth may stain. Do not be disappointed when the braces come off and your teeth are not sparkling white. This is normal. Therefore, consider getting teeth whitening at the dental office as this will be an effective way to whiten your teeth.

You Will Need Retainers

Your dentist will provide you with retainers immediately after removing your braces. This is because, after removing the braces, your teeth are at risk of moving and becoming crooked once again. Therefore, you will need a retainer to ensure that the teeth do not move out of place.

That being said, it is important to take care of your teeth after braces, just as when you had braces. Be sure to brush your teeth twice a day and switch out your toothbrush every three to four months. Make sure that you floss daily to get rid of plaque and that you also clean your retainers. Finally, keep up with your dental appointments.
