Home Care Tips for Easing Your Mouth Sore Discomfort

Posted on 2/15/2016 by Mark Bieber
A man suffering from a mouth sore causing him pain!A mouth ulcer or sore can ruin your day, as they can be quite painful and make it difficult to drink and eat. For the most part, these sores will go away on their own without any type of treatment, but until then, they can be extremely uncomfortable. To reduce this discomfort, try a few of these home care tips.

Eating and Drinking
When it comes to eating and drinking, what you choose can make your mouth feel more comfortable. Be sure to drink a lot of water or suck on ice chips to numb the area. Warm liquids could also help, but the bottom line is that you should choose soft, bland foods that won't further aggravate the sore.

Pain Relief
If your mouth sore is causing you pain, you can take an over-the-counter pain medication to help. Some nonprescription pastes, liquids, or gels can also numb the area, including Anbesol. You might also want to use a straw to drink liquids so that the beverage doesn't actually make contact with the sore.

Cleaning Your Mouth

Make sure that you are rinsing out your mouth several times a day, and you can use a warm salt water solution to keep the area clean. Use a soft toothbrush and avoid aggressive brushing.

If you want to use a mouthwash, go ahead, but choose a variety that doesn't contain alcohol, as this could lead to further pain and discomfort. You should also work to keep yourself hydrated so that your mouth doesn't dry out, and if you feel that you are suffering from dry mouth, try sugar-free candy or gum to stimulate saliva production.

If you are experiencing chronic mouth sores - or if you have a mouth sore that will not go away after two weeks or more - contact our office to set up an appointment.
