Why You Should Go Easy on Summer Sweets

Posted on 7/20/2016 by Mark Bieber
A woman chewing onto a cube of sugar.Summer is finally here and we have fruity cocktails, berry cobblers and iced lollies to look forward to.

While it may seem like these sweet treats are a harmless indulgence that we save just for the warmer seasons, be careful not to over-indulge as they will wreak havoc on that beautiful smile.

Yes, a delicious ice cream cone or a frozen slushy seem to define those hot summer days, but beware of the amount of sugar that you are consuming. Sweets and summer time go hand in hand, from fresh watermelon to cold daiquiris, all things summer seem to start with sweets.

Protecting Your Teeth During the Summer Months

If you have a sweet tooth and this notion that you should watch your sugar intake or your oral health will suffer is news to you, do not panic. There are things that you can do to protect your mouth, even during those hot summer months when sweets seem to be part of every meal (and in between).

•  Moderation. Surely your mother taught you all things in moderation are okay, right? Well, the same goes for summertime sweet treats. Make them a treat, not a habit. These treats are often packed full of sugar and acids that can contribute to tooth decay and the erosion of enamel.
•  Choose your snacks wisely. It is easy to think that just because you are snacking on fruit that you are causing no harm to your body and in most cases this is true. However, citrus is the exception. Citrus contains a lot of acid, which erodes tooth enamel and leads to tooth decay. So, snack wisely (and in moderation).
•  Brush often. Keep a toothbrush and toothpaste with you at all times. After indulging in a sugary sweet summertime treat be sure to brush to remove residual sugars and acids.

Please contact us if you have any questions about sugars effect on your oral health.
