![]() Issues to Watch Out for While PregnantDuring a time where your body is going through a lot of changes it is no surprise that your mouth undergoes some significant changes as well. One of the myths that we sometimes hear is that the growing baby will steal calcium from the mother's teeth and bones. This is not true. Women do sometimes lose teeth during or after pregnancy but it's not because of calcium loss. Often it's because of gum disease. Gum disease in pregnant women (sometimes called "pregnancy gingivitis") affects the health of many pregnant women's gums sometimes as early as 2 months into the pregnancy. If left untreated this gingivitis has been shown to have some measurable effects on the baby's birth-weight and the mother's oral health. Pregnancy tumors are also a possibility when expecting. Usually pregnancy tumors are simple inflamed areas of the mouth that possess no cancerous tissue. If they impede eating or speaking, we may opt to have them removed. How to Prevent Pregnancy GingivitisThe best way to ensure that your mouth stays healthy during pregnancy is to stay true to a routine of good oral health-care. Not only brushing and flossing, but also coming into our office for an examination and cleaning so that we can monitor your oral health and let you know about any changes you ought to be making to your routine. Please contact us to schedule an appointment today! |
