Dangers of Chewing on the Insides of Your Cheeks

Posted on 2/15/2017 by Mark Bieber
A woman in pain after chewing on the inside of her cheek.
Do you randomly find yourself chewing on the insides of your cheeks? A lot of people do this when they are stressed out. If you do, you need to do your best to stop.

It can be something people do without ever realizing they are doing it, until they get to the point of pain, but it can have negative health consequences, too.

Don't Chew on the Insides of Your Cheeks

When you chew on the insides of your cheeks, it cuts them. This leaves you with open sores inside your mouth. Since the mouth is full of numerous types of bacteria, this can lead to an infection in your cheek.

This can also cause a lot of pain and swelling in your face. When you do enough damage to the inside of your cheek, you can even cause a callous to form.

Each time you open a new wound inside your mouth, you are opening up your mouth to having blood cells in it. This isn't good for your mouth, either. You want to do your best to stop biting and chewing on the insides of your cheeks because it can leave your mouth unhealthy.

If you notice that you do this regularly, talk with your dentist. Sometimes they can help you get past this bad habit, and they can also give you a much better idea as to what the consequences of this type of action really are.

They may be able to fit you with a mouth guard that helps you keep from chewing on these sensitive tissues, plus, they may be able to relate this behavior to bruxism, which opens up their treatment options. Instead of chewing on your cheeks, contact our office. He or she can help!
