When we are growing up, when we notice we have a loose tooth, we get excited. That means the tooth fairy is going to be making a visit in the near future, leaving us with something fun in return for an old tooth.
However, as an adult, that same enthusiasm isn't there. We know that we only get one set of adult teeth, and we need to make sure that we take good care of them. If one becomes loose, that means something did not quite go as planned. Caring for a Loose ToothThe first thing you need to do is be gentle with the tooth. You don't want to make the situation worse by eating something rough, as it can knock a loose tooth completely out. Next, you want to call your dentist and tell them what is going on.Explain where the tooth is, any other symptoms you may be having at the time, and if you are in any type of pain. They will want you to come in so they can see what is going on, and possibly splint the tooth while it heals. If your tooth is loose from trauma, then you want to try and keep the area from swelling. This means taking an anti-inflammatory and keeping ice on the area intermittently until you can get seen. If it is from something like gum disease, then the best you can do is to hold the tooth in place gently until your dentist has the time to see you. Having a loose tooth as an adult is no fun, but it does happen now and again. Keep up with your regular oral hygiene routines and see your dentist regularly to avoid any issues that may lead to you having loose teeth as an adult.
