One of the most common causes of grinding or clenching the teeth, also known as bruxism, is stress. The more stressed out a person is, the more likely they are to do either, or both, of these activities.
What makes it worse is that most of the time, they are done without conscious effort. If you take five minutes here and there to relax a little, it can go a long way towards relieving your stress. Here are a few quick ideas that may make avoiding bruxism just a bit easier. Ways of Relaxing a Bit to Avoid BruxismOne easy way of relaxing and getting a smile on your face instead of a stressed out furrow is to jam out to your favorite song. Just the few minutes to sing along, and dance if you can, can greatly reduce your stress.Exercise is another way of reducing stress. Instead of being upset or frustrated and taking an elevator, take the stairs. Focus on getting to the top of the stairs. It may make you winded, but it will also take the edge off the stress. Quick meditations can also help you relax a bit. Tell yourself that you will calm down. Count to 10, 20, or 50. Just take the time to do something to clear your mind. It doesn't have to take long. It just needs to work for you. If you have been struggling with bruxism for some time, it is important that you come in and see us. It can cause additional dental issues that you may not be aware of. Plus, it can also be something we may be able to help you recover from, by fitting you for a mouth guard.
