The toothbrush is the without a doubt the most important cleaning agent when it comes to dental hygiene.
It follows, then, that appropriate toothbrush care, hygiene, and maintenance are of utmost importance. It is recommended that toothbrushes be replaced after every three or four months, sometimes sooner if it becomes brittle after frequent use. Even more important, though, is the cleanliness of the toothbrush within the three months before replacement. Have you been keeping up with toothbrush cleanliness? Microorganisms There has been a lot of research going into investigating whether toothbrushes may be a harbor for microorganisms which then result in oral or systemic infections. It is known that the oral cavity houses many different types of microorganisms. It is only logical, therefore, that some of these will be transferred to the toothbrush when brushing teeth. Further, the microorganisms that are found in the regions where the toothbrush is stored might also settle on the brush. Some scientists have suggested that bacteria might be present on the brushes right out of the box since in most cases there is no requirement for storage in a sterile package. The body has a natural response which helps in defense against these microorganisms. Cleaning toothbrushes, however, goes a long way in ensuring dental, oral and overall health is maintained. Research Evidence There is enough evidence to support the fact that bacteria will almost always accumulate on toothbrushes if they are not properly and regularly cleaned. However, there is not nearly as much evidence present when it comes to proving that this bacteria is likely to cause harmful infections, or lead to adverse systemic or oral effects. Still, a common sense approach is to make sure toothbrushes are as clean as possible. If you have any questions or would like to schedule an appointment, please call us at (818) 748-9998 today. |
