Even if you brush and floss regularly, visit us every six months and take care of your oral health, you can still be at risk of developing cavities, especially in the back molars. Sometimes this happens because of the way your teeth are shaped or, in some cases, it's due to genetics. Some patients are more prone than others to get cavities. Luckily, there is a way to prevent cavities in individual teeth and keep your mouth healthy and free of decay. The use of dental sealants is a tooth saver because it protects a tooth from collecting food particles that are hard to dislodge. What is a Dental Sealant?Dental sealants are usually applied to young patients to prevent the development of cavities in molars, but we also add them on adults. These teeth are hard to reach when brushing and food particles can create problems in the future. Most children don't like to spend the minimum two-minutes brushing their teeth, so they are at a higher risk for tooth decay. Sealants help prevent cavities which could lead to tooth decay if not controlled. How Long do Dental Sealants Last? With the proper care, dental sealants can last up to 10-years. Each time you visit us for your regular cleaning appointments, we will check your sealants to see if they need replacement. We don't need to remove them, because they wear with time and use, so if your sealant is not in good condition, we will reapply it as is necessary to protect your teeth. Some dental sealants wear more on some people than others and will need to be redone at a faster rate. If you have questions about how often you should have dental sealants replaced, please let us know and we will be happy to answer them. |
