A Root Canal is Easier on Your Mouth Than an Extraction

A Root Canal is Easier on Your Mouth Than an ExtractionFor many people, the idea of a root canal is enough to send them running from the room. What most people don't realize, though, is that a root canal is actually not that bad and is a much better option than having a tooth extracted.

A root canal is much easier on your mouth than losing a tooth, even if it is painful. The reason why people often believe the opposite is because they don't know what a root canal really is or what it's for.

What Is a Root Canal Designed to Do?

A root canal is designed to allow you to keep a tooth that has a damaged or dead pulp. The pulp, which in the innermost part of the tooth, is responsible for allowing blood to flow to that tooth. If it's damaged because of a cavity or a crack, it can become infected with bacteria.

When that occurs, it's possible that the pulp will die. A root canal allows the dentist to create a small hole (a canal) to the pulp and remove it. The area where the pulp was is then completely cleaned and filled in. The tooth may then need a crown or other repairs. You're likely to feel some pain for a few days, but then everything will be back to normal.

Losing a Tooth

Losing a tooth, on the other hand, leaves an empty space in your mouth. The teeth on either side are no longer supported, which can cause some problems down the line. The trauma of having a tooth extracted doesn't end there.

The gum in the area can be weakened, plus your overall tooth alignment may change slightly. You'll also likely experience more pain for a longer period of time with an extraction.

Overall, extraction should always be considered a last resort. It's much easier on your mouth to have a root canal because the tooth is still there. If you're concerned that you need a root canal or even an extraction, give us a call today. The longer you put off a root canal, the more likely it is that we'll have to do an extraction.
