![]() If your gums are receding don't worry. It does not necessarily mean you are practicing poor dental hygiene or that you have some terrible affliction that affects your teeth. It can happen to anyone. What Causes Gum Recession? One cause of receding gums is gum disease. This is a result of a bacterial infection of the gums. Gum disease can be caused by certain autoimmune diseases, medications, dry mouth, or smoking. It is a result of plaque building up around the gum area. Unfortunately, it can just be a roll of the dice.Genetics can cause receding gums. The good news is that it does not have to be a permanent condition, it can be reversed. But as with any condition, the sooner you catch it the easier it is to correct. That is a reason why annual dental checkups are so important. So, How Can It Be Fixed? Most importantly, catch it early. If you do, you can help your receding gums by regular and correctly flossing and brushing regularly with a soft bristle brush. Aggressive brushing is another cause. If it is caused by grinding or clenching your teeth, we can fit you with a mouth guard. We can also correct it with a deep cleaning around the roots. We may also prescribe antibiotics once the procedure is complete. If you wait too long you may need an oral surgeon to open a flap to better clean your teeth. If you have lost bone regenerative material may be placed under the flap before it is reattached to help your body do the regeneration itself. Call our office today, and we can set up an appointment for you. |
