How to Manage A New Toothache Until You Can Get Seen

How to Manage A New Toothache Until You Can Get SeenToothaches are caused by a variety of dental issues. You might have a new cavity, a problem with an existing filling, or even a cracked tooth. While it is important to see us to diagnose the issue and determine the best course of action, there are steps you can take to manage the issue until your appointment.

Gargle with Salt Water

One effective home remedy to try if you have a toothache is to gargle with salt water. Salt water will help to reduce swelling by removing bacteria from the mouth. Use warm water and no more than half a teaspoon of salt and swish it around your mouth for at least five seconds.

Use an Over-the-Counter Pain Killer

To help with any discomfort, use an over-the-counter painkiller like Tylenol. Take the medication as directed on the packaging, especially at night time if the pain might prevent you from sleeping. There is an old wives' tale that says you should apply the painkiller directly to the affected tooth and gums – don't do this. It won't improve the pain and you may end up with burns to the gum tissue.

Use Ice

A cold compress or ice pack can also help to dull the pain. Apply the pack to the cheek on the affected side of the face. Never apply ice directly to the tooth, as this will likely cause the pain to worsen.

Use a Numbing Gel

You can also find numbing gel at your local pharmacy that may help with tooth pain. If you don't have access to a numbing gel, whole cloves or clove oil can also help, and this substance is safe to apply directly to the affected tooth.

If you are suffering from a toothache, give our office a call. We'll get you in as soon as possible to identify the source of the problem and how to best treat it.
