How Our Teeth Change as We Get Older

How Our Teeth Change as We Get OlderAs with virtually every other part of our body, our teeth change as the years go by. You likely already know about the changes that aging have on the rest of your body: aching joints, diminished strength, frail bones, uneven balance, reduced hearing and vision, and so on.

The list goes on and on. But did you know that your teeth will also change as you get older? Here is more information, and some tips to help slow the aging process.

The Appearance and Composition of Your Teeth

The most noticeable change as we age is that the teeth begin to yellow and darken. This is due to a few factors.

For one thing, eating and drinking foods and beverages that stain the teeth will have a cumulative effect over the years. Of course, you can reduce this issue by being careful about what you eat, and using whitening kits available at most stores.

However, the appearance of your teeth is not only due to years of drinking tea and coffee. Actually, as a person ages, his or her teeth undergo a fundamental change: the enamel begins to thin out. The dentin is the part of the tooth that is under the enamel, and it is a darker color than the enamel. So, as the enamel thins, the dentin becomes more visible, leading to yellowed and darkened teeth.

To try to slow this down, you need to use a good toothpaste with fluoride in it. This will help strengthen the enamel and decrease the rate at which it wears away. In addition, you should have a fluoride treatment performed every time you have your teeth cleaned.

While nobody likes to think about aging, the fact of the matter is that it cannot be avoided. Fortunately, you can take some steps to preserve your teeth as you age. Doing so will lead to better oral health in your golden years.
