What Foods Do You Need to Avoid Immediately After Dental Sealants

Posted on 2/22/2021 by Mark Bieber
What Foods Do You Need to Avoid Immediately After Dental SealantsWhile fluoride toothpaste helps in dealing with cavities, they are ineffective in controlling cavities in the molars. This is because of the deep grooves you may have, making it difficult to clean the teeth even with the best brushing technique.

To prevent the buildup of food in these crevices, you need dental sealants.

Ideally, children should get dental sealants as soon as their permanent molars erupt. Sealants are plastic coatings applied to the molars to prevent cavities by acting as a barrier between the tooth and plaque.

Dental sealants do not require major dietary changes. However, immediately after getting dental sealants at Toomin & Bieber Aesthetic Comprehensive Dentistry, you should avoid hard and chewy foods to prevent damage.

Hard Foods

Dental sealants will take a day or two to conform to your teeth. To ensure this happens and the sealants serve you for long, you should avoid hard foods such as ice and hard candies. This is because these foods can break the sealants and provide a channel for acids and foods to access your natural teeth crevices. This will expose your teeth to decay as bacteria hide in these spaces and wear out the enamel.

Chewy Foods

Chewy foods such as gummy candy, fruit snacks, and caramel will stick to the sealant and pull them off. Besides pulling off your dental sealants, these foods are rich in sugars and increase your tooth decay risk. Therefore, dental sealants offer a useful way of restricting the consumption of harmful sugars. While avoiding these foods, you should consume healthy fruits and vegetables to keep your mouth healthy. You should also maintain a regular dental checkup and good oral hygiene.

During the checkup, we will examine your teeth and the sealants to ensure they are in shape and protecting your molars. For more details on diet and dental sealants, contact our office today.
