Am I Hurting My Gums by Brushing Too Much?

Posted on 2/8/2021 by Mark Bieber
Am I Hurting My Gums by Brushing Too Much?If you are serious about protecting your oral hygiene, you may brush twice daily, floss every day and use mouthwash whenever necessary. All of these are good habits to keep up. However, sometimes we become a bit too enthusiastic about our oral health that it damages the excellent work we had worked for.

Premature Wear and Tear

Although we recommend brushing your teeth twice every day, brushing them too hard can have adverse effects. The biggest one in this regard is the premature wear and tear brought about by the friction. Although the enamel is quite hard and robust, overaggressive brushing causes the enamel to slowly wear out. Although teeth recover from the normal wear and tear experienced when doing a routine activity such as eating, once the damage is too extensive, it becomes impossible to fill out naturally. Due to the enamel being thinner than usual, you'll find that dental sensitivity is much more frequent.

Gum Recession

When we brush our teeth too much, the gum tissue usually recedes and tends to shrink back. When the gums shrink, it will affect the way your smile looks. As the gums continue to recede, your teeth's nerve endings may become exposed, which results in increased toothaches and sensitivity. For instance, drinking hot or cold beverages will be very difficult since the foods will contact exposed nerves. Additionally, tooth roots are susceptible to outside stimuli and are therefore more vulnerable to decay because the enamel isn't there to cover it.

Types of Toothpaste

Not all toothpaste is made the same way. Some are made to lighten the teeth while others just to clean them. Toothpaste designed to brighten your teeth is usually loaded with bleaching agents and particles to make the enamel brighter than it is. When you brush too much, you'll find that your enamel will quickly thin out, exposing you to many uncomfortable situations.

If you are enthusiastic about your oral health, come see us, and we'll help you keep the best smile if your life without damaging your teeth.
