How to Prepare for a Tooth Extraction

Posted on 5/24/2021 by Mark Bieber
How to Prepare for a Tooth ExtractionYou may need to get your tooth or teeth extracted for multiple reasons. In fact, wisdom tooth extraction is one of the most common kinds of extraction as the human jaw doesn't have enough space to accommodate the complete set of 32 teeth. Other reasons may include tooth decay, infection, chipped or broken teeth.

Preparing for a Tooth Extraction

There isn't much you can do before a tooth extraction short of calm yourself down before the procedure. The calmer you are, the better it is for you, and the easier it will be for the dentist to extract your tooth smoothly. Here are some other steps you can take to ensure the process sails smoothly.

•  Wear a short-sleeved shirt, especially if you will be getting anesthesia through an IV.
•  Don’t eat or drink before the procedure – You must walk into the clinic for your extraction on an empty stomach. Thus, avoid eating for at least eight to ten hours before the procedure.
•  Do not smoke – When we say do not smoke, we suggest avoiding smoking for at least two weeks before and after the procedure. Chemicals in cigarettes can prevent healing and even increase the risk of infection.
•  Provide Your Medical History – if you have heart diseases, diabetes, thyroid disease, or even the flu, you should tell your dentist beforehand. Do provide them the complete list of medications that you regularly take as well. Your dentist needs to be well-aware of your health conditions as they can create severe complications later on.
•  Have someone drive you home, especially if you are going under general anesthesia.
•  Make sure you let your dentist know if you’ve experienced nausea, vomiting, or any other medical conditions the night prior to the procedure. Discuss whatever you’ve experienced with your dentist as you may need to reschedule your appointment or opt for a different anesthetic.
