Financial Implications of Poor Oral Health

Posted on 7/26/2021 by Mark Bieber
Financial Implications of Poor Oral HealthThe effects of poor oral health are not just limited to causing various oral conditions. Poor oral health can also have a significant impact on your financial situation. In fact, it has been found that lack of proper oral care costs an average adult several thousands of dollars in a year.

The Financial Consequences

One recent study done by the Journal of Dental Research gave a detailed account of the financial damages caused due to poor oral health. It was found that oral conditions cause an indirect loss of around $144 billion worldwide. The direct annual cost of poor oral health was found to be around $300 billion. These costs were found by including the total amount of working days missed due to oral conditions and the estimated amount of money used to seek treatment for those conditions. This information was obtained from a total of 66 nations across the world.

Patients suffering from severe periodontitis, tooth loss, untreated tooth decay, and gingivitis were part of the study. The biggest cause of financial cost was found to be poor oral hygiene. Lack of regular brushing and flossing resulted in several oral conditions, with decay and gum disease being the most common. The research also highlights that getting these conditions treated early can help reduce the cost.

Therefore, to help avoid unnecessary financial implications, you should maintain high oral hygiene standards. You need to follow a strict routine of brushing your teeth at least twice a day and flossing regularly. You should also use mouthwash more often. This will get rid of any bacteria that could cause infections. It is also important to come to our offices for regular dental checks. These checks can reveal an oral condition in its early stages, reducing the risk of severe cases. Visit our offices for more information on the financial implications of poor oral health.
