Role of the Tooth Enamel

Posted on 11/7/2022 by Mark Bieber
Role of the Tooth EnamelThe tooth enamel makes part of the four tissues that form part of the tooth. It is a very hard, white to grayish, extremely mineralized substance that acts as a barrier to protect the tooth but can become vulnerable to debasement, particularly from acids in food and drink.

Enamel, as a strong barrier, protects the inner layers of your teeth, including the dentin and pulp. It guards against acid and plaque decay and protects the sensitive inner layers of the tooth from extreme temperatures (like hot and cold foods). Without enamel, teeth would suffer significant damage and be more susceptible to infection.

Enamel also helps to keep your teeth white and bright. Although it is translucent, its color varies from grayish-white to beige, and it can discolor your teeth if it is damaged. Dentin, which lies beneath the shell of enamel, is primarily responsible for tooth color.

How to care for the tooth enamel

The tooth enamel is defenseless against demineralization thus; preventing tooth decay is the most effective way to maintain tooth strength. The vast majority of people use toothbrushes, which can reduce the amount of dental biofilm and food particles on lacquer. Floss is used in the middle of two neighboring teeth to wipe the lacquer surfaces free of plaque and food particles to reduce bacterial growth. Although neither floss nor toothbrushes can reach the deep notches and pits of the finish, good general oral-health habits can usually prevent enough bacterial development to keep tooth decay at bay. You can also avoid sugary and acidic foods.
