Tooth Colored Fillings

Crossection of a tooth showing a cavityTooth colored composite fillings are a simple dental treatment that has been developed to preserve a damaged tooth structure. Our dentists, Dr. Toomin and Dr. Bieber use composite fillings to restore teeth that have been damaged by decay. We love this composite material because it allows us to remove a smaller portion of the natural tooth vs. the silver amalgam fillings during the filling process. This makes it a less invasive repair. We also like composite restorations because they can intercept potential tooth fractures and, in turn, prevent sensitivities with hot and cold foods. Our dentists at Toomin & Bieber Dentistry will discuss with you which filling is appropriate for your situation.

What is a Composite Filling?

Dr. Toomin and Dr. Bieber will generally recommend a composite filling. This composite material is a tooth-colored material, it can be shaded to blend in with your natural tooth giving you a flawless look. It would take a trained eye to spot this filling. The material is made up of a mixture of porcelain or quartz that is then mixed with resin that will harden. Together, this is a durable material that will be strong and durable. In the past, composite fillings were thought to be less durable than silver amalgam, this is no longer true. Composite fillings should last several years. Composite fillings are resistant to cracks and fracture in small to medium sized restorations. We even use composite filler in back molars, the material is strong enough to withstand normal chewing pressure.

Composite fillings for Aesthetics

Composite fillings are even used to repair chips and cracks in your teeth. At Toomin and Bieber Dentistry, we frequently use composite filling to repair front teeth. Known as aesthetic bonding, or composite bonding, this process is generally much less expensive than dental veneers or crowns. Aesthetic bonding is a great solution offering a cost efficient, fast, temporary fix. It does not last as long as dental veneers or crowns and does not offer the same strength, but is a wonderful alternative when needed.
