What happens during regular cleanings and exams?
Here is what you can expect when you come in for a checkup:
Your medical history
Before we do anything inside your mouth, we need to make sure we have all of the information necessary to make the cleaning go as smoothly and safely as possible. If this is your first visit, we will need to know about your medical history. On subsequent visits, we will ask you about any changes in your health such as new medications, pregnancy, diabetes, arthritis, and so on.
Teeth cleaning
Our next step is to thoroughly clean your teeth. We begin by scraping off the plaque that has built up around the gum line. Then we will floss between and around all your teeth to remove any plaque or food residue.
After that, we’ll use a tooth polisher and paste (with multiple flavors to choose from) to give your teeth a smooth and shiny finish. This polishing will remove any remaining plaque and prevent future plaque from collecting as easily.
Teeth examination
Once your teeth are clean, we will examine your mouth to check for any problem areas. We’ll use a metal probe with a small mirror, which allows us to see between and behind your teeth and gums. We will also check for softening of tooth enamel, dentin, swollen gums, mouth sores, and redness. We may also take x-rays and do an in-depth dental exam to gain a thorough understanding of the current state of your mouth.
Examination results and advising
After we finish the dental exam, we will tell you what’s going on inside your mouth and what steps we’ll need to take in the future. This may entail setting up another appointment or simply taking better care of your teeth at home. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us.
