Protecting Your Teeth While Adjusting to College Life

Going off to college is both fun and terrifying. For the first time in most people's lives, they truly need to fend for themselves and make adult decisions.

If you have been coddled by your parents, this can be especially difficult.

Think back and make sure that you are tending to your body the same way you would have when you were living at home. Just because you are now all grown and living on your own, doesn't mean you should let your body suffer.

Taking Care of Your Teeth Doesn't Change

You still need to go through and follow the same basic principles that you did at home while you are living at college. Brush your teeth at least two times each day, about a half hour after you finish eating. Floss at least once per day, ideally near the end of the day to make sure that nothing is sitting between your teeth at night while you sleep.

Make sure you still see your dentist, or a new dentist near your campus, every six months to keep an eye on your teeth. They will want to make sure that you are taking proper care of your mouth, and keep up with whatever normal work you were having done prior to heading off to college.

Having fun at college shouldn't include neglecting proper oral care practices. Make time each day to go through and care for your teeth, just like you did when you live with your parents. If you do not care for your teeth properly while in college, you could end up struggling to keep your oral health up as an adult.

Contact our office if you have not yet seen your dentist since school started, and make sure everything is going right in terms of the health of your mouth.
