A dental crown at Toomin & Bieber Aesthetic Comprehensive Dentistry is a restorative procedure that can be used to fix a range of problems with your smile and teeth. Whether you have damaged, delicate, or missing teeth a crown can fit over your tooth to add strength while providing a natural cosmetic result.
When Should I Get a Dental Crown?
Dental crowns are artificial tooth restorations that fit over the teeth, which is why they are commonly referred to as caps. They can be used for a variety of purposes and are very versatile. They provide strength to your damaged or missing natural teeth as well as improve their appearance. Tooth crowns also replace missing teeth in bridges and implant procedures.
What Are Crowns Made From?
The most popular option for crowns is porcelain bonded to metal. This is strong, light, and inexpensive when compared to porcelain ceramic. However, porcelain is very hard-wearing and gives a good cosmetic result.
Zirconia is one of the newer materials. It is a white ceramic that is incredibly strong. It can be thinner than traditional crown materials, which means that more of the tooth structure is saved. However, it is the most expensive option.
What is Involved in the Dental Crown Procedure?
The process of getting a crown usually requires the tooth to be prepared in order for it to support the new cap. This involves removing any excess enamel and leaving behind an inner core that is strong enough for mounting purposes.
The next step is to take impressions of your mouth before sending them off to a lab where they check over everything before manufacturing your custom-fit crown. You will be fitted with a temporary tooth crown until your permanent crown is delivered.
When you return to have your new crown fitted, any minor adjustments to fit are made by us, and the crown is affixed with a light-activated adhesive that bonds the crown securely in position over your natural tooth.
How Long Will a Dental Crown Last?
A dental crown is a durable and long-lasting tooth replacement procedure, but it can only last for so long. The average time you can expect it to last is around 10 years, although some can last for much longer.
The lifespan varies depending on how much stress the teeth are put under when chewing or biting food, as well as what habits you have such as grinding your teeth together, crunching ice cubes, or biting your fingernails. Any habits such as these can damage your crowns, so you will have to curb these habits if you want to get the most wear from your tooth crowns.
Otherwise, dental crowns are easy to maintain. You should treat them as you would your own teeth. Brush and floss twice daily - every morning and night. It is important that you are fastidious in your oral cleaning regime, making sure that you keep the mouth clean to avoid bacteria collecting underneath the crown that can cause tooth decay and gum disease. Any underlying problems to your natural teeth and gums can compromise your tooth crown, which may cause you to lose it.
Steps: Getting a Tooth Crown Procedure
There are two ways we can produce your dental crown. Traditional crowns are constructed and placed a couple of weeks after your initial treatment. Same-day crowns are constructed and placed on the same day as treatment. Traditional crowns tend to fit and look better, however.
For traditional crowns, we first need to examine your tooth's current condition. We do this using a visual exam and x-rays. Then, we treat any infection or damage on your tooth.
For cosmetic procedures, extra treatment may not be necessary. Local anesthesia is used when necessary. Once your tooth is in a healthy condition, it is filed to make space for the crown. We obtain an impression of the filed tooth so that a perfectly shaped crown can be molded.
We cover the filed down tooth with a temporary crown while our lab makes your permanent crown. You can then come in for a second appointment to get the permanent crown. This is attached to your filed tooth using dental cement, which will harden.
Same-day crowns have a similar process initially. The main difference is that they are constructed at the office on the same day as your tooth is prepared by our dentist. Your gums will still be healing following this procedure, so same-day crowns may need to be replaced in the future.
Can tooth crowns be whitened?
Unfortunately, dental crowns cannot be whitened with traditional teeth whitening treatments because they are made of materials like porcelain or ceramic, which do not respond to bleaching agents.
If your dental crown becomes discolored, it would need to be replaced to match the color of the surrounding natural teeth. Regular dental cleanings and good oral hygiene can help maintain the appearance of crowns.
What are my other options to replace missing teeth?
Replacing missing teeth is crucial for maintaining oral health, functionality, and aesthetics. Various options are available to suit different needs and preferences.
Dental Implants
Dental implants are a popular and highly effective option for replacing missing teeth. They consist of a titanium post surgically implanted into the jawbone, acting as an artificial tooth root. Once the implant integrates with the bone, a crown is placed on top, providing a natural-looking and durable solution. Implants are favored for their longevity, stability, and the ability to preserve jawbone health by preventing bone loss.
Fixed Bridges
Fixed bridges, also known as dental bridges, are another option for replacing one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of one or more artificial teeth (pontics) anchored by crowns on the adjacent natural teeth (abutment teeth). This method requires altering the healthy teeth next to the gap, which may not be ideal for all patients.
Removable Dentures
Removable dentures come in two main types: complete and partial. Complete dentures are used when all teeth in an arch are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. Dentures are custom-made to fit the mouth and are held in place by the gums or clasps around existing teeth.
Implant-Supported Dentures
For those seeking a more stable solution than traditional dentures, implant-supported dentures offer an excellent alternative. These dentures are anchored to dental implants, providing improved stability and comfort. Implant-supported dentures can be either fixed or removable, offering flexibility based on individual preferences and oral health conditions. They help maintain jawbone health and provide a more natural chewing and speaking experience compared to conventional dentures.
